Signe Olson Peterson

Throughout its first decade of publication, The Baptist Pietist Clarion featured the poetry of Signe Olson Peterson (some English, some translated from the Swedish for us by Tom Coleman). In the first half of the twentieth century, over two hundred of her poems appeared in publications like Svenska Standaret, Midvinter, Söndagsskolan och Hemmet, Sånningsmannen, The Kerkhoven Banner, and The [BGC] Standard; another 100+ were never published. She also wrote several hymns with her husband, Rev. E.B. Peterson.

Her poems and hymns provide insight into the Swedish immigrant experience in North America and illustrate several of the themes of the Swedish Baptist Pietist tradition: a need for a born-again experience, a delight in prayer and Bible study, a celebration of the community of faith, a desire for holy living, and a hope for the promise of Heaven.
